Saturday 10 December Classical Spectacular at MEN Arena Halle Orchestra playing classical favourites. Two places have become available owing to cancellations. Sunday 11 December A Nice n' Easy walk with a Christmas Lunch.
Starting the 5 mile walk from the car park in the delightful village of Ashford in the Water, we proceed via lane, field and wood to reach Monsal Head where fine views over the River Wye will, hopefully, be had on a crisp December morn. Just a mile further, the Crispin Pub in Great Longstone will await our arrival for lunch. After lunch, easy terrain of 1.5 miles will see us back in the car park.
Meet at 11 am in Ashford in the Water car park. Map.Ref. SK194 697 Directions: From Hazel Grove join the A6, via Disley to Buxton, continue on the A6 towards Bakewell. The turning to Ashford in the Water is on the left 2 miles before Bakewell. Alternatively, from the large roundabout at the end of the Silk Road, next to Tescos, in Macclesfield, take the B5470 to Whaley Bridge. Turn left at the traffic lights on to the B5004 and drive through Whaley Bridge to join the A6 by turning right when you get to the roundabout. Continue towards Buxton then further towards Bakewell.
Monday 12 December Book club meeting - Small Island (544 pages, September 2004) by Andrea Levy Andrea Levy's award winning book 'Small Island' is a story about prejudice: Britain's and American GI's racism towards the "invading darkies"; middle-class Londoners snobbery towards the Cockneys; the Jamaicans towards the "small islanders"; and the British empire’s treatment of its Caribbean and Indian colonies. Told from the perspective of four different characters, it tells the story of the first wave of Caribbean immigrants to Britain following World War II. Sunday 18 December Bollington to Rainow Circular walk A moderate 7 mile walk finshing along Kerridge Edge with views across Cheshire, reaching the folly of White Nancy by the, best, and easiest possible route. Lunch in the Church House Inn, Bollington, at the end of the walk.
Meet 10.30 am in the Adlington Road car park, Bollington. SJ930780.
Directions: You need to get on to the Silk Road (A523) and approach either from the north (Stockport) or south (Macclesfield). Take one of two turnings off the A523 into Bollington. These are either B5091 or B5090 depending on which direction you are coming from. These two roads join anyway, so continue into Bollington. Pass under the large viaduct and a church on the left, then into Adlington Road on the left, to reach the car park after a couple of hundred yards.
Saturday 24 December Christmas Eve Dinner Dance at Hollin Hall in Bollington. Five courses of magnificent food, followed by a disco. Large choice from a set menu. We will keep the numbers even if possible. Last year 40 of us had a really good evening. We have booked 30 places and may be able to get more if you book early enough. Cost £22.50. A leisurely 5 mile stroll around Rudyard Lake, punctuated by a stop for mince pies and hot mulled wine at the half-way point. Just the thing to shake off those Christmas ‘blues’. Victuals donated by Barry. To ensure your share of ‘grub and grog’ please book a week in advance. There will be an opportunity to give to Friends for Leisure, a local charity for disabled children. Meet at 11am in Rushton Spencer village car park. Directions: Take A523 south from Macclesfield. After 7 miles enter Rushton Spencer village. Watch out for speed cameras! Turn right into Station Road. Just beyond the pub car park turn left into a small car park.
Saturday 31 December New Years Eve party at Guys Guy invites members and friends to this traditional event. If you wish to go please contact Guy before Christmas. As usual everyone is asked to bring a plate of food and a bottle. If past years are anything to go by we should have an abundance of food, convivial company and great music to make this a truly festive occasion. Saturday 7 January "Harvey" at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. When Elwood P Dowd starts to introduce his imaginary friend, Harvey, a six foot one inch invisible rabbit, to guests at a society party, his sister, Veta, has seen as much of his eccentric behaviour as she can tolerate. Sunday 8 January New Year walk around Alderley Edge Blow the cobwebs away and enjoy some fresh air and a flat 5 mile walk from Alderley Edge over Hare Hill. There are good views over the Cheshire Plain. The pub lunch stop is after the walk at The Oakwood on Brook Lane, just a short drive away. Enjoy the live music while we eat. Get the brain cells working after the Festive Season’s exertions. Another fun-filled Boddies Quiz Night. Format as before. Teams of four. Organise your team beforehand, or make up on the night. Sunday 15 January Macclesfield Forest A moderate 6 mile walk through the forest with wide-ranging views overlooking Wildboarclough and the moors beyond. We then pass through the hamlet of Macclesfield Forest with the Forest Chapel, famous for Rush Bearing service each August. Back into the forest with views across the forest and reservoirs. Lunch at The Leathers Smithy after the walk. Meet at 11am in Trentabank Reservoir car park. SJ962712. Directions: Take the A523 road out of Macclesfield towards Leek. In approximately ½ mile turn left to the traffic lights into Byron’s Lane. Pass under the canal through Gurnett. In approximately ½ mile from the canal, turn left into Langley Road. Pass through Langley and continue along Clarke Lane. Turn right at the Leathers Smithy pub passing Ridgegate Reservoir on your right. Turn left at the road junction and the Trentabank Picnic Site and car park is on the right. |

Sunday 22 January Ramble on part of the Staffordshire Way A moderate 6 mile walk starting from the public car park, which is adjacent to the Knott Inn car park. The first half of the walk covers a flat stretch of the Staffordshire Way beside Rudyard Reservoir. The return is by way of pleasant fields and farmland for lunch at the Knott Inn.
Meet at 10:30am in the Rushton Spencer public car park. SJ 935624. Directions: Approach Macclesfield by the Silk road (A523). Straight ahead over the roundabout by Tesco and continue to pass Arighi Bianchi's store on your left. Continue on the A523 heading towards Leek, passing Macclesfield football ground on your right. About 5 miles from the Tesco roundabout you should reach traffic lights, where the A54, Congleton to Buxton road crosses. Keep straight ahead. Rushton Spencer is a further 3 miles. You need to turn into a side road on the right a few hundred yards before the Royal Oak pub where the A523 takes a sharp bend to the right. The car park is 200 yards down this side road just after the Knott Inn on the left.
Wednesday 25 January Book club meeting Wide Sargasso Sea (192 pages, March 2000) By Jean Rhys For anyone who has read Bronte's 'Jane Eyre', this is considered an essential follow up. Although written by a different authors in different eras, whose styles of writing couldn't be more diverse, 'Wide Sargasso Sea' retells the story of the mad Creole wife locked away in Rochester's tower, only this time from the wife's perspective. Sunday 29 January Mobberley and Ashley ramble An easy flat 6 mile walk across fields and along the edge of Tatton Park. We go through Ashley village and return along the River Bollin for lunch at the Railway Inn, Mobberley at the end of the walk. It could be muddy so boots are recommended. Meet at 11am at The Railway Inn, Mobberley. SJ778814. Directions: At the end of the A34 Wilmslow bypass turn right towards Wilmslow. At the Kings Head roundabout turn left. After about 1 mile turn right at a mini roundabout along the B5085 towards Knutsford. Pass The Bird in Hand pub on your right. Pass Ilfords on your right. Turn right along Smith Lane. There is a brown sign for The Railway Inn. It's on the right, just before the level crossing. Saturday 4 February "Quartet" at the Club Theatre, Altrincham
Takes place in a retirement home for Theatricals. A new venue for Thursday Group in a
cosy, small theatre which has a friendly bar. Meet in the bar at 7pm for curtain up at 7.30pm.

Sunday 5 February Bollin river valley re-visited
A flat 5 mile walk along the Bollin Valley and return to Geoff’s hostelry for drinks and nibbles. Please contact Geoff before 3 February if you intend to join the walk. Meet at 11am at Geoff’s home in Wilmslow. SJ 935 624. Saturday 11 February Dinner Dance at the County Hotel, Bramhall.

Sunday 12 February A Country Walk away from the bustle of Macclesfield
A short, moderate, circular walk of just under 6 miles starting at Sutton Lane Ends on the outskirts of Macclesfield. We go over to Langley village, then using footpaths across farmland up to the lower end of the Croker Hill ridge for a short section of the Gritstone Trail. Descend by track to Sutton Reservoir and through a bit of woodland back to Sutton. Lunch will be in the Lamb Inn just along from where the cars are parked.
Meet at 10:30 am. Roadside parking only at the end of Robin Lane, Sutton Lane Ends. SJ 927 710. Directions: Approach Macclesfield by the Silk road (A523), straight ahead over the roundabout by Tesco and continue to pass Arighi Bianchi's furniture store on your left. A varied and easy 7 mile walk from Compstall. A slight ascent up to Marple Head into Mellor countryside. A final climb up to Cown Edge with stunning views, weather permitting, of Derbyshire and Cheshire. Descent from Cown Edge to Rowarth and back through Etherow Park to The George Hotel for lunch at the end of the walk. Meet at 10:30 am at The George Hotel, Compstall. Directions: From Marple take A626 to Marple Bridge. Follow the road over the river. After half a mile the road turns sharply right to Glossop. At this point turn left on the B6104 to Compstall. Sunday 26 February Walk from Bollington to Kettleshulme and back We will walk from Bollington along the Gritstone trail up to Sponds Hill from which we descend down to Kettleshulme. After a pub lunch at the Swan Inn, Kettleshulme, 01663 732943. We return via the Todd valley. Total distance 8 miles.

A moderate 8 mile walk with a few undulations. It starts at Chinley Station car park, goes on the B road towards Peep-O-Day, turns off this road through fields, across the A624 and goes along track towards South Head. Skirts around South Head and heads down and along Oaken Clough. Comes back via Coldwell Clough, Peep-O-Day, and along the ridge towards Chinley . Bring packed lunch. Visit to the pub after the walk.

Directions: Follow the A6 out of Stockport straight across at the traffic light junction where the A6015 New Mills Road meets the A6. Go straight through Furness Vale. Immediately after going under the railway bridge take a very sharp left turn off A6 signposted to Chinley. If you get to the roundabout where the dual carriageway starts, you will have gone too far. The turning is approximately 400 metres from this roundabout. In Chinley, which is 1½ miles from A6 turnoff, you will see a signpost for the Railway station onyour left. Follow the sign to the Railway Station to find the car park.

Tuesday 7 March Book club meeting - Writing Home (482 pages, July 1998) by Alan Bennett Autobiographical and idiosyncratic. This is a collection of Alan Bennett's prose writings, assembled by Bennett himself from over a quarter of a century of diaries, reminiscences, broadcasting and reviews. It includes his address at Russell Harty's memorial service, and recollections of growing up in Leeds. At the heart of the collection is "The Lady in the Van", his true account of Miss Mary Shepherd, a tramp who took up residence in his garden and stayed for 15 years. This edition has an additional three years of diaries and journalism, including a tribute to the late Peter Cook. We start off on the Middlewood Way and cross a few fields before making a steady climb up to Bowstones. Bring a packed lunch. As this is Mothering Sunday we will enjoy a lunch, weather permitting, with superb views over the Cheshire Plain. Descent back along more pleasant paths with a final stretch alongside the canal. The walk will be followed by a drink in The Boars Head pub. Meet at 10.45am at Nelson Pit Visitor Centre car park, Higher Poynton. SJ945834. Þ Contact Sunday 2 April Spring walk in Cheedale This 7 mile walk starts with a strenuous climb up towards the village of Blackwell, but is rewarded by some wonderful views of the Peak District. The walk descends gently down to Millersdale for a pub stop at the Anglers Rest. A table has been booked in a boot free area. After lunch we return via CheeDale, following the river Wye. There may be Dippers and Herons visible on the river. You need to be surefooted due to slippery rocks. Meet at 11am at Wyedale pay and display car park.

It all begins (and ends) with a pair of size ten slippers. Greg wakes up in the bed of girlfriend Ginny to find another man's footwear at his feet and, much as he loves her after only a week or two, he cannot help being a bit suspicious. Bouquets of flowers, boxes of chocolates, and a dodgy phone call, only serve to make matters worse; but he still asks her to marry him before she sets off to spend the day with her parents. Greg decided to travel to an address in Buckinghamshire, which he found on a cigarette packet, where he will surprise both Ginny and her doting mum and dad. But it is he who is surprised... Cost £6. Þ Contact Sunday 30 April Historic Lancashire revisited An easy to moderate 7 mile walk, in a new area around Grane valley Rossendale, known as Haslington Grane. The walk visits areas which were once thriving communities between the 17th and 19th centuries, before they succumbed to the advancement of the Industrial Age. You will see much evidence of this as we encircle the south end of the valley. The walk encompasses woodland and moorland, with some excellent views and little climbing. There is an excellent café at the start for those seeking refreshment before the walk. Lunch will be at The Duke of Wellington pub, a short drive from the meeting place. Meet at 11am at Clough Head Visitors Centre car park.
Directions: Use the anti-clockwise M60 east from Stockport. Continue on to the M66 at J18. Continue northwards past Ramsbottom where the motorway ends and becomes then A56. Continue past Haslingden, looking for next exit, A6177, signposted Blackburn. At the bottom of the slip road turn left on to the A6177, Grane Road, and follow Blackburn signs. The visitor centre is on the right, approximately 3 miles from the A56, past Duke of Wellington pub and Calf Hey car park on the left. Sunday 30 April Historic Lancashire revisited An easy to moderate 7 mile walk, in a new area around Grane valley Rossendale, known as Haslington Grane. The walk visits areas which were once thriving communities between the 17th and 19th centuries, before they succumbed to the advancement of the Industrial Age. You will see much evidence of this as we encircle the south end of the valley. The walk encompasses woodland and moorland, with some excellent views and little climbing. There is an excellent café at the start for those seeking refreshment before the walk. Lunch will be at The Duke of Wellington pub, a short drive from the meeting place. Meet at 11am at Clough Head Visitors Centre car park. Directions: Use the anti-clockwise M60 east from Stockport. Continue on to the M66 at J18. Continue northwards past Ramsbottom where the motorway ends and becomes the A56 (Do not take the first exit signed A56). Continue past Haslingden, looking for next exit, A6232, signposted Blackburn. At the bottom of the slip road turn left on to the A6232, Grane Road, and follow Blackburn signs. The visitor centre is on the right, approximately 3 miles from the A56, past Duke of Wellington pub and Calf Hey car park on the left. The centre is approximately 28 miles from Stockport and travel time of approximately 45 minutes.
