Walking

Details of the Sunday and Wednesdaywalks are given on the Current Programme.  Click here

We are fortunate to live in an area where there is wonderful countryside for walking very close by, and the Thursday Group takes full advantage of this.  As well as being able to enjoy the countryside, walking is good exercise and is an excellent way of getting to know people without feeling under pressure!!

The walks that the group does tend to be 6-9 miles long and take up much of the day.

As some members are interested in shorter easier strolls that do not take up the full day, we are introducing "strolls on Sunday" into out programme.

Guidance for Walkers

We welcome you to join us on The Thursday Group walks. It is a really great way to get to know other members. However, please be aware that we could be walking across muddy fields on some part of the walk and you do need to have reasonably sturdy water-proof boots. You also need to find out what refreshments, drinks, food, etc you need to bring with you. Usually there is a pub stop for refreshments, etc in the middle or at the end of the walk. Depending on weather conditions we recommend that you bring an anorak, an extra layer of warm clothing, gloves and over trousers. If you have not done much walking we would suggest that you choose to go on the low level easier walks initially and join the more strenuous walks when you have gained in fitness and confidence.

Incidentally, over a period of over nearly 30 years The Thursday Group has a clean record in terms of accidents on walks. However, it is not unknown for walkers to trip and fall and we have to stress that you are responsible for your own safety and that The Thursday Group does not accept any liability whatsoever for the unlikely chance of an accident.

Car Sharing

The Thursday Group would like to help to preserve our environment by encouraging the greater use of car sharing. Details of the car sharing venue should be included in the walk leaders' description of walks – particularly when there is a long car journey. If you wish to participate, please be at the car sharing venue by the stated time. Please be aware this is a sharing scheme and members should expect to contribute to the drivers’ costs or do their share of the driving.

Navigating to the Start of the Walk

We are aware that people sometimes have difficulties finding the start of walks, which can be well away from a built up area, and we are therefore endeavouring to make it easier for people to find the start of the walks.  We will continue to put the directions drafted by the walks leaders on the description of the walk, but we will put additional information on the website that will enable you to find the start of the walk.  On the “Events Calendar” page there is a Google Calendar.  Look up the walk you want to join and click this to get details.  The “Where” section of the Google calendar will be formatted in a way that brings up a Google Map giving the exact location of the walk start when you click the “map”.  This is why there are 2 long numbers (the latitude and longitude recognized by Google Maps) after the description of the start of the walk.  Click “directions to here” and put in your home postcode and it will give detailed directions and estimated traveling time.

For those of you fortunate enough to have a satnav, you might be able to input the latitude and longitude as your destination.  You can use the latitude and longitude on the website to put it into your satnav.  Please note that you only need to input 5 decimal points.  On a TomTom satnav you input the latitude with the first number you get from the website preceded by N (for North).  The longitude is input by the second number preceded by W ( for West) or E (for East).  The longitude on the website is mostly given by a minus number which is W ( for West).  A longitude without the minus sign indicates that it should be E (for East).  For instance, the numbers 53.0974117853559 -1.5653641619524 will be input N53.09741o for latitude and W1.56536o for longitude.

You can find detailed directions using OS map ref. by inputting it on to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ which will also give you detailed directions and estimated journey time.
